One such cutting-edge therapy is Photobiomodulation (PBM)—a non-invasive treatment using near-infrared (NIR) light to stimulate neuronal mitochondria. Emerging research supports PBM’s ability to improve executive function, memory, attention, and emotional regulation across diverse patient populations.

A sham-controlled study of 30 older adults tested PBM’s impact on executive function using the Eriksen Flanker and Category Fluency Tests​

  • PBM led to a significant 38% reduction in reaction times (p = 0.038) on the Flanker Test, improving selective attention and inhibitory control.

  • Participants in the PBM group generated 28% more words in the Category Fluency Test (p = 0.027), demonstrating enhanced mental flexibility and processing speed.

  • Improvements were seen after just one 7.5-minute PBM session using 633 nm and 870 nm LEDs.

B. PBM in Healthy Young Adults: A Meta-Analysis

A systematic review and meta-analysis (Salehpour et al., 2019) examined PBM’s effect on cognitive performance in young adults (17–35 years old) across multiple domains​.
